I often think back on when Hildur Guðnadóttir, one of my favorite film composers and the first woman to win in this category, won an Oscar for Best Original Score for Joker. At the time, I was dealing with immense loss and trying to make meaning of what I was going to do in this life. I had spent a lifetime of playing other people’s music and all the while I had this persistent ache to share my own music with the world. In her speech, she spoke what seemed like a direct message to me. I felt space and time disappear as she said “To the girls, to the women, to the mothers, to the daughters, who hear the music bubbling within, please speak up. We need to hear your voices.” I teared up and the very next day was the day I started my journey of composing. Thank you, Hildur! #hildurguðnadóttir #femalecomposers #womenliftingwomen
